Debut author, Jeff Rivera’s successful self-published book, Forever My Lady has just been released in Mass Market paperback by Grand Central Publishing. Read our interview with Jeff and leave us a comment. One randomly drawn commenter will receive a free copy of Jeff Rivera’s Forever My Lady
About the book:
When the streets are hard and life is cheap, both in the neighborhood and and out there in the world, boys in the barrio become men before their time. Young Dio Rodriguez, unloved, uncared for, frightened and lonely, was a survivor. By the tine he was 13 he had the hand signals to flash, and the hard, cool barrel of a gun tucked down the back of his jeans to prove he was a man who could take care of himself. Then he met Jennifer and discovered there was no gun, no gang tough enough, to protect him against the life-changing power of love . . .
Publishers Weekly says of Rivera’s debut: “A genuine care for dynamic Dio allows Rivera to deliver a sincere story of transformation.” (July)
Jeff talked to Unleash Your Story about his writing process.
How long did it take you to write Forever My Lady?
It took me years to write the Forever My Lady screenplay but once I wrote the novel it only took 3 months. What you’re reading when you pick up a copy in the bookstores is actually just my first draft. I did a first draft and a polish. I’d never written a novel before, just decided to flow with it.

What do you like most writing novels or preparing to write them?
I came from a television and entertainment industry background so what I love the most about writing novels is there are no diva actors or difficult crew to deal with. I love the whole preparation of a novel, the flow of writing it and then going back and tweaking it. I love the process and I love the response from readers.

You seem to have given each of your characters a very distinct past instead of
making them one dimensional. What is your process like creating characters?
I usually start out with creating characters inspired by real people I know. I want to make sure they have 3 distinct layers, what we assume they are on the outside just by looking at them, who they really are (which is usually the exact opposite of who we thought they’d be) and the last layer is who they are when the pressure is on.

What would you say the theme of the novel is?
I would say everlasting love but there’s so much more to it than that. It deals with some serious issues that we deal with today.

Where can we pick up copies of Forever My Lady?
You can get copies at any bookstore in America, Amazon.com and my website: www.JeffRivera.com Or leave a comment here and get a chance to win your copy for free! Winner will be announced on Monday, November 17, 2008.
